It was a last minute plan. A fellow photographer and a good friend of mine Tyler and I decided to drive to Amboy Ghost Town on Route 66.
On our way to Amboy, we drove through a small town called Ludlow, located off Interstate 40 on Route 66 on the way to Needles. A few dilapidated buildings in this town caught our attention. We slowed down to take a look around here and thought that these buildings will make a good subject for a sunset.
Since we had about three more hours before sunset, we continued our drive to Amboy, which was about 30 plus miles from Ludlow. The sunset was around 5:50 PM on that day. We thought that we would have enough time to take some pictures at Amboy and drive back to Ludlow.
We spent more time exploring abandoned buildings and taking pictures in Amboy. We then headed back to Ludlow. At this point, we realized that what we did not account for was that the sun goes down behind the mountains.
This means we didn’t have as much time as we thought we did for the blue hour in Ludlow. When we realized that we rushed and drove as fast as we could to reach Ludlow. Sadly, we didn’t quite make it there on time.
By the time we got there, all that was left was the residual and/or reflected light from behind the mountains. Nonetheless, we still took some pictures of the dilapidated buildings.
I managed to get some panorama shots, bracketed shots for some HDR’s and some long exposures. Even though we didn’t make it for sunset, We were quite happy with the pictures that we did get.
I definitely would try to go to Ludlow again just to take these sunset pictures. Or maybe sunrise pictures.
