Fossil Falls is another detour that I took on my way back from my Fall photo trip in October 2018. The road leading up to the falls became dirt/gravel and is decently maintained. Any sedan could easily make it through this path. This falls is located towards the East on HWY 395. Watch out for the sign for Fossil Falls exit. You could easily fly past the spot. If you see a red cinder cone towards the east, it means that you have either crossed or are approaching the site, depending on which direction you are driving on.
It was a quick stopover so I did not explore too deep into the wilderness but I did find this place intriguing. This area is filled with volcanic rocks in all directions. I was already deadbeat tired from the trip, so I did not venture by foot. Instead, I drove around as much as possible and as far as I could get my vehicle in.
I did get on foot and took the short 0.2-mile trail leading to the Fossil Falls. The view was beautiful in every direction. I did manage to get a few pictures before the battery in my camera died and I was too tired to hit the trail again with fresh batteries.
This unique land formation deserves another visit in the near future.
